Aluminium garage doors are the most searched-for garage door in South Africa, and for good reason: they do not rust, they are light enough for a small motor to lift, and they look clean on a modern house. But aluminium is not automatically the right answer. On some openings a steel door is tougher, quieter or simply better value. This guide sets the two side by side so you can choose before anyone quotes you.
The short answer
If you live near the coast, want a door that will still look good in ten years without repainting, or are fitting a motor to a wide double door, choose aluminium. If the door takes knocks from children, bicycles or a reversing bakkie, or you want the most door for the least outlay on an inland house, steel usually wins. Rust and the coast
This is the biggest single difference. Aluminium forms its own protective oxide layer, so it does not rust the way steel does. A powder-coated aluminium door in Durban, Gqeberha, Cape Town or anywhere salt carries on the wind will keep its finish for years with little more than a wash.
Steel doors are protected by galvanising and a painted or powder-coated finish. Inland that works well for a long time. Near the sea, once the coating is scratched or chipped, rust starts at the damage and creeps under the paint. Steel can still be used at the coast, but it needs more care and an earlier repaint. If you are within a few kilometres of the sea, aluminium is usually the safer long-term choice.
Strength and dents
Steel is harder. A steel sectional or roll-up door shrugs off the kind of knocks that leave a crease in an aluminium panel: a ball kicked against it every afternoon, a trolley, a car nudging the bottom rail. Aluminium panels can be repaired or replaced, but a dent in a smooth aluminium finish is visible.
For a household with young children, a busy driveway or a door that doubles as a goal, steel is the practical choice. For a garage that is mostly opened and closed by remote, the difference rarely matters.
Weight, motors and wide doors
An aluminium door weighs a fraction of the equivalent steel door. That matters most when the door is motorised. A lighter door puts less strain on the springs, the rollers and the motor, so components last longer and a standard domestic motor copes comfortably. On a double garage door, where the weight of a steel curtain or panel set adds up quickly, aluminium makes automation easier and quieter.

Noise
Both materials can be quiet if the door is well installed, but steel roll-up doors in particular tend to rattle more as the curtain coils. Aluminium doors, and insulated doors of either material, run more quietly. If the garage sits under a bedroom or next to a neighbour’s wall, it is worth asking for an insulated or foam-filled panel, whichever material you choose. Looks and finishes
Aluminium doors come in a wide range of powder-coated colours and in woodgrain-effect finishes, and they suit modern, clean-lined houses. Steel doors are available in fewer standard finishes but can be painted to match anything. If you want the look of timber without the maintenance, a woodgrain aluminium door is the usual compromise.
Cost over the life of the door
A steel door is usually the lower price on the day. An aluminium door usually costs less to own over ten or fifteen years at the coast, because it does not need rust treatment and repainting. Inland, where rust is slower, the gap narrows and steel is often the better value. We quote both side by side on request so you can compare like with like.
Which door type: roll-up, sectional or tip-up?
Material is only half the decision. The other half is how the door opens:
- Roll-up (roller) garage doors coil into a drum above the opening and need very little headroom or ceiling space.
- Sectional garage doors run up and back along tracks, seal well and insulate best.
- Tip-up doors swing out and up as one panel and suit older, narrower garages.
Most door types are available in both aluminium and steel.

Choose aluminium garage doors at the coast, on wide motorised doors, and where low maintenance matters most.
